Second Sock Syndrome
Recently, I found myself craving some simple mindless knitting, a change from the complex patterns I’d been working on. Obviously, vanilla socks came to mind, so I quickly cast on a pair of Rose City Rollers.
Well…
I say that I cast on a pair, but of course, I only cast on a single sock, on 23cm circular sock needles. Because mindless knitting around and around was what I wanted, right?
Turns out, I'm bad at letting myself launch into some solid, mindless knitting. I started off with the cuff of the sock, and then I started alternating yarns helix style, until I knit a FLK heel in the second colour, and then went back to alternating colours every row. This was not the mindless around and around knitting that I had planned for myself. I made it to the toe, put the whole project on hold for a week or two, finally finished the decreases for the toe and finished the sock... to find that the heel was far too loose, the cuff wasn't quite high enough, and maybe the foot was a little bit too long as well.
Long story short, I did not knit a second sock.
Instead, I cast on for the Skimmer Socks Revisited using magic loop this time, and boy was this pattern fast!
I guess it helps when there's a lot less of the sock to actually knit…
I got to the heel, decided that I would probably want a bit more negative ease, after my failed, lonely Rose City Roller, so I started the heel a touch early, and then knit up the cuff. When I tried it on, I discovered that it was too short, and the heel kept slipping off! So naturally, I haven't cast on a second sock for that pattern either... I am desperately hoping that my 2-in-1 socks are the right size, so that I can have the double pleasure of having socks that fit, as well as having the second sock finished as soon as the first is off the needles! I'm trying the Rose City Rollers pattern again, but this time with the heel as recommended, so we'll see how that goes...
Wish me luck!
