When I'm knitting out in the wild, it's not uncommon for someone to comment on my handiwork, and casually mention that they would love to be able to knit, but that they "have no patience for that sort of thing.
I've thought about this, and I think it's not so much that knitting requires patience, but rather, knitting bestows me with patience. I have suffered through many interactions that would normally cause me to reach for sharp objects. When I already have my knitting needles in hand, I'm quite happy to just continue knitting with them, and let the situation play out. It's when I don't have my knitting with me that I will get frustrated with people much faster, and my impatience with the situation can really start to show. I might get easily distracted, and perhaps start looking at my phone instead of focusing on whatever is at hand. In contrast, having my knitting with me allows me to direct my focus to whatever is going on around me, and be relaxed while doing so.
If you aren't yet a knitter, because you think you don't have the patience for it, I want you to stop and think. What do you really not have the patience for? Maybe knitting could change that for you!
